Put yourself first in 2017

And so the New Year begins - and I wonder what it will bring. I am always excited about the future and what each day holds, the last few years on a personal level have been amazing ones for me, of course there's the been the low bits with the health but the good bits far outweigh those, and it is the good bits we should focus on. Looking back and how far I have come in such a short space of time fills me with excitement about what the next years might hold - the world is yours to grasp so grab it with both hands and keep running forwards, feed your dreams and turn them into reality!

One of the most important bits of advice I had, and something I have to keep reminding myself of, is you have to put yourself first. For me my nature is to reach out to people (and animals) to want to help and fix things and this is not always possible and also not always helpful, other people's "things" are not for me to fix but I can be there to offer support. However how can I offer support if I am ill myself or dealing with my own crap.... And this is why it is so important to keep on top of looking after yourself, recognising when you need to say no, when you need to stop and take time out for you.

Once we accept we can't do it all, that sometimes we need to just stop and put ourselves first, we then find we can do so much more as a result, plus what we can offer is of a far better quality.

So for 2017 why not put yourself first for a change. Many of us run around unaware of what we are doing to ourselves (this was me once). We are on automatic pilot zipping around from one place to the next completely ignoring out bodies shouting at us and so we need to check in with ourselves regularly and ask yourself how are you? How do you feel physically and emotionally today?

Do a mindfulness body scan meditation to scan through your body and notice any aches and pains, any areas you may be holding on to emotion; when you stop to do this kind of meditation this is when your emotions may come up as just for a moment you are allowing them. It isn't always an easy thing to do, in fact to do it properly the first few times can be very difficult as you have to accept what you are feeling; in a mindfulness body scan when you find an area of pain you breath in to it, some people cannot do this because it means focusing on that pain and they have wired their body and brain to ignore it with the belief this is how they are managing to cope with life.

If you are able, let what you feel be, let it flow and acknowledge it. Ask yourself what do I need to do to help myself deal with what has arisen and then do it. It may be you need further advice or support in which case seek it out, there is no shame in asking for help - for me to be where I am now took an 8 week mindfulness course, 18 months on the horse healing course (which focuses on you first so you are in the right place to heal) and ongoing personal development and check ins with myself over the last 4 years - and I still have a long way to go as you never stop learning and life never stops throwing obstacles in your path!

So if you make one resolution for 2017 make it to put yourself first, you'll be amazed at how much better you will feel and how much more you can do in the long term!
